Record breakers: Sorokin and Herron make the headlines at Centurion 100

The records again tumbled at the Centurion Track100 over the weekend, with ultra running legends Aleksandr Sorokin and Camille Herron the stars of the show.

The event made headlines 12 months ago when Lithuania’s Sorokin set what was then a world record for 100 miles with 11:14:56 and then continued running to break another global mark for the furthest distance covered in 12 hours with 105.825 miles (170.3km). He’s improved both since.

Bedford hosted this year’s event due to the Julie Rose Stadium in Ashford getting resurfaced – but the impressive times continued.

Incredible pace

This time Sorokin targeted 100 kilometres – or 100,000m in track parlance – rather than 100 miles and clocked six hours, five minutes and 41 seconds to knock over three minutes off the previous record, set by Japan’s Nao Kazami in 2018.

To quantify that, it works out at an average pace of 3:39/km (or 5:53 per mile).

And Camille Herron, fresh from her own 100-mile/12-hour heroics in Nevada in late February, also collected a number of new marks including the World V40 track 100km record.

A whole host of other new bests – which all need to be ratified – were logged on the day, including Samantha Amend lowering her British women’s 100 miles time by over 20 minutes to 14:10:41.
