It must be eco week here at RUN247 with two environmental initiatives announced in one day! Nutricare are looking to clean up the planet of used sports tape and brings you a biodegradable option.

Nutricare has launched a crowdfunding campaign to fund the development of STRAP, the only non-toxic, high performance, sports and body tape made from bamboo fibre, after identifying a gap in the market for a sustainable option.

Due to greater consumer understanding of the use of sports tape for injury prevention and management, the global market for athletic tape is growing rapidly, expected to be worth $538 million USD by 2025.

However, many traditional sports tapes contain environmentally unsound ingredients, such as acrylics, PVC, plastics, and synthetics, which do not break down naturally. As a result, there has been an alarming increase in the use of disposable tape that creates negative effects on the environment, ending up in landfill and waterways after use.

Made with natural bamboo fibre, one of the fastest growing renewable materials on the planet, STRAP is the only sports tape in the world that is zero waste, vegan and sustainable. Every element, including all packaging, is naturally made from the inside out and is 100% home-compostable. It is also irritant-free and breathable, making it as gentle on the skin as it is strong.

This is not a paywall. RUN247 is still free to read.

The innovative concept is the latest brainchild of B-Corp ‘Best in World’ health company, Nutricare. It follows the launch of the company’s first brand PATCH, which was born when founder, James Dutton, discovered that his young son Charlie was reacting to common wound dressings.

Researching the wound care market to find a solution, James was shocked to learn that traditional plasters create shocking amounts of waste, around 2.04 billion metres of waste annually. This led him to create the world’s first 100% compostable, hypoallergenic, vegan and plastic-free plaster, proving that natural wound care can be as gentle on the environment as it is to the skin.

STRAP tape will be available to consumers from February 2021 in rolls of 5m x 50mm, and is available to pre-order by investing in the crowdfunding campaign which is live on Indiegogo and Kickstarter now.
