The World Mountain and Trail Running Championships 2023 (WMTRC 2023) will be held in the Tyrol region after Innsbruck-Stubai’s bid for the competition proved successful.

The Austrian Alps were seen as the ideal location, with the awarding of the competition backed by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU), the International Trail Running Association (ITRA) and the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA).

Unique landscape

Alessio Punzi, World Athletics’ (WA) Head of Running and Mass Participation, said “the unique mountain landscape of Tyrol, the special combination of urbanity and alpinism as well as the great know-how in the disciplines of mountain running and trail running” were the key aspects behind the region’s winning bid.

WMTRC 2023 is expected to attract around 1,400 active athletes from at least 60 nations, with a total of 16 titles on offer.

Four different races will be held, with the exact routes still to be finalised. Stubai Veritcal will be around 40km, while the classic event in Innsbruck, a spectacular ‘up and down’ trail, will be over 80km.
