Simon Roberts (GBR) and Laura O’Driscoll (IRE) lead the men’s and women’s events respectively after the first day of the Cape Wrath Ultra.

The opening day of the 400km race saw runners take on a 37km route, largely made up of road or track, from Fort William to Glenfinnan.

Welshman Roberts, who has claimed victories at Motane Spine Challenger North and the Montane Cheviot Goat this year, reached the day one finish in 2:47:48, just over 12 minutes clear of Mick Tupman (GBR), who was 30 seconds ahead of Thomas Øderud (NOR).

Paul Ainsworth (GBR) is fourth after day one, the position he finished the race in 2018.

Meanwhile, O’Driscoll, a two-time Irish 50km champion, reached Glenfinnan in 2:59:48, with Despina Berdeni (GBR) and Vicky Savage (GBR) trailing her at roughly 15 minute intervals.

Megan James (GBR), who was touted as a contender for the win prior to the race, was seventh woman to reach the day one finish, 50 minutes back from O’Driscoll.

Runners cover 57km on day two as they head to Kinlock Hourn, with the terrain becoming more treacherous as established trails and paths become less frequent.
