A new five-day ultra-marathon around Mount Kilimanjaro has been announced for 2023.

The 250km Ultra X Tanzania will take place from June 12-16 and is a UTMB® World Series Qualifier in the 100-mile category.

Runners will climb halfway up Africa’s highest point before sweeping down through the countryside and sugar plantations to Namalok Nature Reserve and the Blue Mountains.

Ultra X co-founder Sam Heward said: “This is one race location we have had our eyes on for a while, and we cannot wait to bring it to life next June.

Stunning scenery

“Competitors can expect incredible scenery, a huge variety of terrain that really does showcase the best of the country, some wildlife, and a week they will never forget.”

The course starts at Lake Chala on the Kenyan border before heading south to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park where the main action takes place.

Daily stages will begin between 0500 and 0800 AM and range from 40-70km in distance, with checkpoints every 10km.

A barbecue and presentations will take place on the Friday night after the final stage.
